The Computing Environment and Sensory Syncrasis: Evidence Review for Paper 2
- What the environment tunes toward: an outward-facing, fast-switching, offloaded mode. Readers calibrate less carefully and process expository text more shallowly on screens (g ≈ −0.21). Memory shifts toward external stores (photo-taking impairment replicates; habitual GPS use predicts decline in hippocampal-dependent spatial memory). Self-control problems account for an estimated 31% of social media use. What gets pushed out is slow, self-paced and internally held processing. Most of that is measured as change, not proven harm.
- Several famous findings have weakened: the "Google effect" Stroop result failed replication; the laptop-vs-longhand note-taking advantage failed a direct replication (Urry et al. 2021); the handwriting EEG "connectivity" study and the MIT "cognitive debt" preprint face serious methodological critiques; the school phone-ban evidence is null-to-mixed.
- Your three ideas: (1) Typographic interlude as bandwidth artifact: likely novel in framing and well supported by traffic and speech-recognition data. (2) Typographic vs acoustic digital-native cohorts: speculative. (3) Voice-to-text as a speech-training bridge: no peer-reviewed study shows that dictation improves unaided spoken fluency; a testable hypothesis, not an established finding.

The best-supported thesis is that the computing environment changes perception and cognition through what it lets people offload and what it pulls attention toward. The idea that screens make everyone "visual" does not hold up. The strongest causal evidence covers four things: memory offloading (photo-taking, GPS), how people pace their reading on screens, short-form context switching, and capture designs that run at the scale of whole environments (Facebook rollout, deactivation, digital addiction). The weakest evidence covers generational cohorts and the claim that voice-to-text trains speech. Of your three ideas, the "typographic interlude as bandwidth artifact" is the most original and the easiest to defend. The cohort idea is plausible but has almost no direct evidence. The voice-to-text-trains-speech idea currently has no direct support. Recast it as a hypothesis built from adjacent findings.
1Strand verdicts (verbatim)
- The typographic interlude. The descriptive history is solid: text dominated early, and video now dominates traffic. Speech recognition crossed a usability threshold around 2016–2017, and broad-domain robustness arrived around 2022. The bandwidth-artifact interpretation is your original synthesis. Key data: Switchboard WER ~15% → 5.1% (Xiong et al. 2017); Sandvine 2023: video "now equating to 65% of all internet traffic." Novelty: I found no source that explicitly argues the text era was a bandwidth/hardware artifact that technical maturation then reversed. Check Levinson's Digital McLuhan (1999), de Kerckhove and Strate.
- Two cohorts of "digital natives." Weak. The "digital native" category is empirically discredited (Bennett, Maton & Kervin 2008; Kirschner & De Bruyckere 2017). No study compares a typographic-internet cohort with a video-internet cohort. Short-form video produces acute prospective-memory costs in the lab (Chiossi et al. 2023), a state effect, not cohort evidence.
- Voice-to-text and spoken fluency. No peer-reviewed study shows that dictation or speech-to-text improves unaided spoken fluency or speaking confidence. Adjacent: speech-recognition feedback improves L2 pronunciation (Ngo, Chen & Lai 2024, g = 0.69); ultrasound visual biofeedback improves articulation (Yiu et al. 2026, d2 = 1.32) but "may not facilitate generalization" (Sugden et al. 2019). Risks: recognition that fails on atypical speech gives negative feedback; text preference in social anxiety can work as avoidance.
- Cognitive offloading. Offloading is real and costs memory for the offloaded content. Photo-taking impairment replicates (Henkel 2014; Soares & Storm 2018). Habitual GPS use predicted steeper spatial-memory decline at 3-year follow-up (Dahmani & Bohbot 2020). The "Google effect" Stroop result failed replication; the LLM "cognitive debt" preprint (Kosmyna et al. 2025) is not peer-reviewed and has been critiqued.
- Reading on screens vs paper. Robust, small, and moderated: g = −0.21 (Delgado et al. 2018, 54 studies, N = 171,055), larger for expository text and under time pressure, none for narrative; grew 0.01 g per year 2000–2017.
- Typing vs handwriting. Mueller & Oppenheimer's longhand advantage did not survive direct replication (Urry et al. 2021). Laptop notes are longer and more verbatim. Handwriting's benefit for letter learning in young children has better support. The 2024 EEG "connectivity" claim is methodologically weak (Pinet & Longcamp 2025).
- Environment-scale designs and capture. The strongest causal strand. Facebook's college rollout worsened student mental health (+0.085 SD; Braghieri, Levy & Makarin 2022). Four-week deactivation improved well-being (+0.09 SD; Allcott et al. 2020). Self-control problems cause 31% of social media use (Allcott, Gentzkow & Song 2022). Broadband access raised hospital-diagnosed mental disorders in cohorts born 1985–1995 (Donati et al. 2022, working paper). Restrictive school phone policies showed no association with well-being (Goodyear et al. 2025).
2Strongest defensible thesis for Paper 2
The computing environment, taken as a whole (keyboard, pointer, memory, compute, network), tunes the syncrasis toward outward, externally stored, fast-switching, segregated processing at elevated baseline gain. It pushes out slow, self-paced, internally held and cross-modally fused processing: handwritten letter-form learning, internal spatial maps, calibrated deep reading of expository text, and sustained intentions. The evidence supports "change with measurable costs to specific capacities," not general harm. The effects are small per person (≈0.1–0.3 SD), but they operate at the scale of whole environments and persist.
3Five testable predictions
- Persistence of offloading (GPS reversal design). 2. Mode, not medium (calibration prompts remove screen inferiority). 3. Context-switch dose. 4. Dictation bridge (your hypothesis). 5. Cohort persistence (your hypothesis), with age-period-cohort modelling.
