# The Medium Becomes the Ground: Foundation Research on Sense Ratios, Precision, Interoception, Allostasis and Addiction
Research document · Canopticon · received 2026-10-04 · McLuhan & media theory · condensed from chat; summary, verdicts and caveats verbatim, tables shortened

The literal-reading thesis can be defended, with conditions: McLuhan plainly framed sense ratios as physiological and sought empirical tests, the lateralization neuroscience he reached for in the 1970s–80s has not held up, and modern predictive-processing and interoception research supplies a much better mechanism ("precision allocation across sensory channels"). The full chain from screens to interoception to allostasis to addiction, however, holds only link by link, and its screen→interoception segment rests on thin, correlational evidence.

## TL;DR
- **Historiography:** McLuhan stated in physiological terms that media "alter sense ratios or patterns of perception steadily and without any resistance," funded and ran media-comparison experiments in the 1950s, and in later work mapped visual and acoustic space onto the left and right hemispheres. Critics read him literally and attacked the physiology: Jonathan Miller (1971) and the psychologist Michael Bross (1992). "Meant it literally, reached for the wrong neuroscience" is a defensible thesis. "Later neuroscience vindicates him" must be weakened to "later neuroscience offers a mechanism his idea can be translated into."
- **Neuroscience chain:** Experience-dependent sensory reweighting, precision weighting, interoceptive inference and allostasis are each established or well supported. The interoception–addiction link is supported (insula lesions, interoceptive precision deficits in substance use disorders). The link from screens to reduced interoception rests on one ecological momentary assessment study, one smartphone-attention study and one lab trade-off effect.
- **Novelty:** No source found in this research joins McLuhan's sense ratios to precision weighting, interoception, allostasis or addiction. The synthesis is original, and its core claim ("allostatic set-point shift is the chemical form of a sense-ratio reset") is a speculative but testable hypothesis, not a finding.

## Verdict on the literal-reading thesis
**Defensible, rated moderate-to-strong, with three revisions.**
1. *Strong:* McLuhan intended a physiological claim. Evidence: the 1960 hypothesis, Selye and Jonas, hypnosis and insanity language, experiments, and contemporary literal critiques (Miller, later Bross).
2. *Strong:* The neuroscience he reached for (hemispheric dichotomy) failed. A resting-state study of 1,011 people found data "not consistent with a whole-brain phenotype of greater 'left-brained' or greater 'right-brained' network strength across individuals" (Nielsen et al. 2013).
3. *Needs revision:* "Later neuroscience supports the general mechanism." Say instead that later neuroscience offers a mechanism class (experience-dependent multisensory reweighting; precision weighting) *into which* sense ratios can be translated.

Recommended framing: McLuhan's claim was *physiological in reference and metaphysical in form*.

## Key supporting findings
- Adult visual dominance is developmentally acquired: Colavita effect "a medium, approaching large, effect size" in adults; child studies "yielded no Colavita effect" (Hirst, Cragg & Allen 2018).
- Inside–outside trade-off: "internal cardiac processing trades-off with external visual processing" (Ren et al. 2024, *NeuroImage* 299:120808).
- Interoception and addiction: a breath-hold perturbation "increased the precision estimates assigned to cardiac signals in healthy individuals" but "had no effect on interoceptive precision" in depression, anxiety, substance use and eating disorders (Smith et al. 2020). "Substance addiction is the outcome of aberrant precision estimation" (Miller, Kiverstein & Rietveld 2020).
- Screens and interoception: corrected citation — Wallman-Jones, Nigg, Benzing & Schmidt (2023, *Biological Psychology* 181:108600): self-reported interoception higher during exercise and non-screen activities than screen time (correlational, self-report). Haruki et al. (2025): people captured by smartphone stimuli had lower interoceptive awareness.
- Polyvagal theory: recommend dropping or confining to a footnote (Grossman 2023).

## Strongest defensible formulation
*McLuhan's "sense ratio" was a physiological hypothesis framed in Thomist terms. Translated into contemporary neuroscience, it is best read as the* **precision ratio** *[new coinage]: the relative confidence the brain assigns to competing sensory channels, interoceptive as well as exteroceptive. Media, including substances understood as media [new framing], shift this ratio. Where a shift is sustained, allostatic regulation recalibrates around it; in addiction, that recalibration appears as a failure to flexibly re-weight interoceptive precision (Smith et al. 2020) alongside an allostatic hedonic shift (Koob & Le Moal). [Original synthesis; not yet tested.]*

## Caveats
- Several primary McLuhan quotes come from secondary transcriptions. Check each against first editions.
- All screen–brain and screen–sensory findings are observational, mostly parent-reported, with small average effects.
- "Interoception" studies measure different dimensions (accuracy, sensibility, awareness, precision). The thesis must specify which one it predicts.
- Unverified: Harley Parker / sensory-profile work at the Centre for Culture and Technology; Winsler and Mulvihill on ADHD private speech; Zhang et al. 2025 (could not be matched).
